I've talked about Bela Borsodi before on The Vine but I recently was reminded of his work and decided to check out his site.

As usual his work in the area of Advertising is peppered with humour. His recent ads for Selfridges are so clever; I'm constantly intrigued by his work.

Using humour in advertising is quite common and I think it lends itself well to this type of product given the usual product shots are static. Women like to know their shoes and handbags form part of their life and personality and these shots start that conversation.

What also fascinates me is Borsodi's comments on society and in particular this image 'Fashion Victim'.

Such an interesting concept of contemporary photography, it's really fascinating. Check out more of his work here.

Do you care?

Do you care about being sustainable? What does sustainable even mean to you? I try to be sustainable, but it's a little subjective. For example, a friend of mine doesn't eat meat because it's not sustainable. She's uber substainable I guess. I eat meat but I try not to buy new clothes; only from op-shops/vintage stores or on eBay. But I don't buy old shoes generally because they are not worn into my feet and hence are uncomfortable.

I found this diagram, it shows how Sustainability can be measured or explained. But in terms of footwear, how can you buy sustainably?

Buy fashion made from sustainable materials: cork, latex and jute... Jute is hessian. This is quite difficult but a simple Google search will yield ethical and sustainable brands like El Naturalista who believe that

"Naturalistas" start their journey observing everything that surrounds them. They travel through the world and observe it, becoming impregnated by its textures, its colors, its lines... and after a thousand journeys, real and imaginary, they discover that a single idea brings us together. Whatever our race or culture... we all walk in search of happiness.

Another brand to consider is The Simple Shoes who use recycled materials in addition to sustainable ones. They use recycled rubber from inner tubes in big tyres, like on a tractor I suppose, to make your shoes.

Another way to buy sustainably is through second hand clothing either via opshops, on ebay, in vintage clothing stores or via clothes swaps. There are a lot of options for second hand clothes and these days the clothes you buy are generally freshly washed and in perfect condition.

What else can you do? Make like it's wartime and mend things that no longer fit.

Parity and the party

The record high of the Aussie dollar is making shopping in online US stores an absolute dream. I'm determined to get some classic pieces at good prices.

I'm also still keen to only buy vintage, but sometimes it is really difficult to find what I want/need. For example, black flat knee high boots. There are not many in eBay Australia, but probably a lot from the US. The cost of the real leather boots from China on eBay are so exciting though, so sometimes I think new has to be the way due to economical considerations.

Reading blogs like Fancy Treehouse and Another Day To Dress Up are a real source of inspiration. Check them out if you don't know them already!

Shoe Horror

Now that I'm working in the city, I see a lot more fashion and in particular shoes. Despite the multitude of blogs and magazines that take aim at women who wear heels that they cannot walk in, women are not getting the message.

Why do I see women climbing a hill (which is in fact a gently undulating city street) in heels like these, but with the rubber tip worn bare. It makes a scrapping noise every time she lifts her foot forward, or should I say drags.

Then the horror of the... shoe boot. I love a wedge, but a wedge covered with the material of the shoe just looks wrong, particularly when the bottom of the shoe and the beginning of the heel cannot be seen by the naked eye.

I'm going to buy these... swoon.

The ultimate accessory

When I used to write for The Vine, I wrote a post about the day that shoes would take over the world... And it informed my decision making for a long time. I was obsessed with shoes, I still am, but I don't spend the same amount of time or money obsessing...

I was reading Miss Kitty's blog this morning about the Perfect Accessory and it made me think about what I'd define as my perfect accessory. Of course it's got to be a shoe, but what type of shoe? A boot is practical and can be worn in almost any weather, or is it the perfect pair of flats? But flats can be uncomfortable despite being pretty... Or is it the sandal? The heel?

It's so difficult to choose but I think I know what I would choose. The brogue.

Above are two examples, and I have another pair in grey and white that I don't have a picture of on hand. These are the best shoes possible as they have the comfort and support of a boot, but the style of a flat and usually a bit of a heel...

Music Festival Fashion

There are always so many articles about music festival fashion and it's in my opinion a little bit over the top. I think music festivals are to be a place of comfort and there is a huge difference between the day and the night. For example, this weekend I'll be at rainbow serpent and the dressing up/costume stuff is intense but at night time it's far too cold to be wearing anything but thermals, padded jackets and gloves.

In addition you have to navigate usually pretty extreme weather conditions and in Australia at this time of the year it usually means dust and lots of it. This year there is water, mud and that means gumboots. I got some cheapies which I hope will last me.

I really hope it doesn't end up like this...

Sometimes when I'm busy at work I get distracted and get transported away to another land; dreamland. I always reminisce in dreamland. And it's usually things I miss.

Some of the things I miss:

Being young and carefree and not having to worry about bills, selling a car, budgetting...
Writing regularly
Horse riding
Getting up late

Style Resolutions

I don't really believe in resolutions per se but I do think style resolutions or perhaps revolutions are important. I have been toying with minimalism; the idea of it excites me but it is truly difficult to put into action. I made a list a few weeks ago and I've stuck to it reasonably well. But I need to make a few updates to the list because I need to really experiment with my style.

A few years ago, I was EXTREMELY into fashion. Gosh I lived and breathed it. I bought all the fashion magazines and wrote for The Vine and dressed up all the time. But I got fat, went through some heavy stuff and I lost all interest in me.

So what now? I've lost most the weight, got my hair cut and I'm feeling more like the girl I used to identify myself with. And sometimes I feel like faaaarrsshhionn can be such a bore, but style never is. Now I'm back in a size that is reasonable, I can get away with cuter outfits, show my arms, bare my legs and feel confident. So from tomorrow, which is my first day back at work, and hence the first day I'll actually be getting up at a proper time and doing my hair, I'm going to try something new every day. No fail safe outfits, no holy grails. Experimentation...

A few questions:

Does anyone have any tips for outfits that work well with bike riding??
When are clogs going out of fashion? (I hate them.)

The art of paring back your life

As I grow older I realise how much I hate clutter and waste. I want to achieve a life of less.

I read this post which was found by googling minimalist wardrobe... it's fantastic and it's a shame I didn't find it a few months ago so I could join in at the right time. I'm going to use it as inspiration though as I want to create my perfect wardrobe.

I often dress for work in a hurry and once I'm here feel that I hate what I'm wearing. Things are uncomfortable, ill fitting or the wrong shade and I don't realise until I'm far away from the closet. This is frustrating, and I know if I put the effort into getting the wardrobe right in the first place, I could get dressed without really thinking and be comfortable and happy all day.

I also want to project a different image than I did several years ago. I've always loved vintage and cute styles of clothing but at 27, I just look immature. I hate overly glam and I dislike anything too dressy, but as a result I often feel under dressed at work (though in Advertising it's a bit vague what "under dressed" really is).

I'm going to post a list of the 33 items I decide to keep and I'm going to be really ruthless.

Dressing Vintage - Shoes

I've long loved wearing vintage clothes but recently I've really whittle my collection down because a lot of the items I owned were very tired. When I was younger, I'd buy a new dress every week for the nights I went out and at $40 a pop they were affordable. It's not pretty rare to get good vintage for that price, so I've been more inclined to buy second hand but not what I call vintage. Vintage has to be from the 1980's or earlier, it can't be last season...

Lately I've felt like dressing up more and want to wear more vintage on a daily basis. The big thing for me is shoes because apart from my Rocco's and my lace up mid length boots, I don't wear any other shoes. I love my sneakers but they are just too loud for someone aspiring to be senior management!

So I've been scouring ebay for some vintage flat shoes. I like the idea of loafers which I have always shied away from in the past.

I ordered some brogues from Urban Outfitters, can't wait to get them! It's really a winter issue because in summer I wear sandals every day.

A conflicting style issue

I have a very interesting wardrobe. From loose tees and jeans to 50's vintage dresses, I have at least one of everything. From one day to the next, I look like a different girl. I swing from wearing sneakers and fitted tights with loose tees to work, to the next week wearing brogues, a full skirt and having my hair tied back. I can't make a decision!

I wonder if someone was to comment on my style, what would they say. I know they'd say that sometimes I dress a bit too out there, especially for work. But then I know my work doesn't particularly mind it as I'm not in a super serious role where I have to speak to clients a lot. But then I wonder if I'm limiting myself?

I used to love wearing heels but now my knees and posture are too damaged so its flat shoes or a very very low heel only. This affects greatly what I can wear. Brogues are a great in between for people like me.

I really want to start dressing like Joan or Betty (Mad Men) every day but it's a lot of effort...

The state of retail in Australia

Gosh Australian retailers are slow. I can't remember the last time I bought from an online retail store that is based in Australia! I love Australian designers and brands but the experience just isn't right.

What are the issues then? As a bonafide fashion lover and an experienced digital producer, I'm putting it out there... I actually wrote about this topic nearly 3 years ago! AMAZING nothing has changed. Well not much!

Price
When you can go to Asos.com or UrbanOutfitters.com and buy 6 things for $AU100 there is little hope that you'd spend the same number of dollars purchasing just one thing from Sportsgirl or Country Road.

Included in price is the postage. Overseas stores generally have free shipping domestically. The average cost of postage from online stores within Australia is $10-15. Yikes.

Stock
Under the heading of "stock" we have both the difference between what's online and what's in store, and in general the availability of items compared with large stores overseas.

A store like Urban Outfitters or TopShop have almost every item online that you can find instore. This is not true of their Australian counterparts such as Sportsgirl where there is a great gap between online and the store.

Is it stock management? Is it supply management? It can't be that hard to figure out, but I'd say this is the biggest factor in getting the dollars in retail spent online within Australia.

The experience
The overseas sites are cool, with blogs and opinion pieces, styling advice and more. Sportsgirl has embraced this idea which has no doubt increased their online profile greatly. Retailers such as Witchery have had online stores for a number of years, but are missing out on the extra factor that is part of the web. It's not Web 2.0, that's old news. It's more than that, it could be called the unknown factor as it's so hard to pinpoint.

Beyond the unknown factor, it's also about useability. Lots of retail sites (whether e-commerce or not) are still built entirely in Flash which is a big issue with useability and scalability across platforms such as mobile and now the iPad market. E-commerce sites are notoriously poorly designed because the plug in shopping cart features are cost effective, but poorly designed.

So where to?
Australian retail needs to take the bull by the horns and get into the digital landscape. They need to employ digital project managers (like myself!), gun developers and strategists with sound experience and take on board their ideas.

I'm really into loafers for summer. I have to wear Orthotics so regular flats and sandals don't really work for me. In winter it's boots and sneakers all the way but for summer I want to be a little more classic.

Solestruck.com isn't just a clever name, it's a website that's been around for 6 years but has not hit my radar until today.

Stocking brands I love like Camper, Jeffrey Campbell and Dolce Vita, the shoes are a fanastic selection and international shipping is free on orders over $200 (easy to spend that much).

Madewell and Alexa Chung

These days I don't see a lot of fashion worth reporting. Generally I find fashion too trendy and trends are boring and cyclical.

Even worse, shoes are just boring. I don't wear heels anymore, my knees ache from trying to get fit, and I am more comfortable in casual clothes at the office. I don't think the big team of developers would appreciate my heel collection so much. When I used to go to client meetings in my old role, it was different. Now with my client being essentially internal, it's sneakers and boots. Which is fine by me!

However, probably the only fashion icon I can respect is Alexa Chung. I read an article about her and how she'd been offered a ton of collaborations only to reject them all. I thought that had balls and showed her to be down to earth.

She has teamed up with Madewell and although they don't ship to Australia (and I have no money to purchase anything) I love the looks that are featured on the site.

Unfortunately I have put on a bit of weight in the past 6 months. I could blame my boyfriend, but he is amazing and I'm not really that unhappy about it.

I have to do a bit of shopping to best accentuate my assets. I know that I will likely fluctuate a bit, but being this size isn't too bad. It just justifies new clothes!

Oh my gosh, this morning I got dressed and found that I really do not have enough pairs of flats! I have over 100 pairs of high heels which I never wear, and I have several pairs of sandals which are great for hot weather. But when it's a little cool in Melbourne, I like my toes to be warm.

Hence next week to celebrate a recent payrise, I'm going to treat myself to a pair of custom designed flats from Bird Of Prey...

Christian Lacroix No More

As Christian Lacroix packs up its offices, warehouses, showrooms and designs, tears are flowing. It's not often a fashion business as big as this goes bankrupt, but its clear that the recession and global financial fuck-up is hurting everyone.

The traditional ending to a Lacroix show with the bridal gown is a fanciful and optimistic gesture. Let's hope some investors show some interest in resurrecting this famous brand.

I have a knuckleduster double ring by This Charming Man, a Melbourne guy (who now lives OS) by the name of Edward Janssen. It's a beautiful ring, it's different and I wear it everyday!

Thanks to Foxyman, I found another jewellery brand I like, Meadowlark. It's NZ based and really sparks my interest. I love different jewellery and I'm even starting to get into gold.

The knuckleduster is HIGH on my want list. Is two knuckledusters one too many?

While I was overseas last year in Europe I began writing a collection of short stories. I've been working on them sporadically but they are coming along. I'm really excited about this project. It will speak to women of all ages on topics of motherhood, sisterhood, friendship, love, consumerism and more. I'm not too sure of publishing processes but one can only try!

On another note, I'm watching a Michael Jackson tribute. My gosh he is amazing.

Julia Lundsten's star is burning oh so brightly! Recently I wrote about Scandinavians and shoe design, and it seems Julia's label, Finsk is just getting better and better.

Miss Susie Bubble has the lucky chance to try on a pair of Finsk's new shoes from her A/W 09 collection, called Project 1. Again Julia uses a combination of different materials which is eyecatching enough, but the sharp protrusion at the heel is just so exciting. I love seeing this stuff and bang my head against the wall that Australia doesn't afford me the opportunity to be around these sorts of things. I feel like this sort of creativity is just EVERYWHERE in London. Boo!

I've been a long time Vogue forum member, but over the years it's bitchy allure has faded into a bitchy past-time. The new issue of Vogue Australia released yesterday heralded a new website. Being an online marketing specialist, I was intrigued.

Changing colours does not a new website maketh. In particular the new forum looks bright and a sight for bleary work eyes. When Anna Wintour released the biggest issue ever, September 08 with 90% advertising, I think Kirstie Clements eyes popped out. The new website features more (read: not anymore interesting) advertising.

One of the best things about Australian Vogue over the years has been the forum. Integrating it into the magazine was a forward thinking strategy that has helped many girls and women in these increasingly modern days. When I was a young girl, I read 'Every Girl' to learn about growing up. As a teenager, I read Vogue to learn about fashion and to talk about relationships and my career. Then one day Vogue shut up shop and stopped anyone from discussing anything deemed 'too personal'. That was the first rule and major mistake Vogue made.

It's a shame to see such a magazine be falling so quickly, when the opportunity is so clearly there. I love magazines and buy every issue of Vogue, it's important to me. But clearly with the internet becoming more important in everyone's lives, every single day, how can they approach their website with such little care?

Disagreeing with editorials

I don't really have a problem with most editorials, but every now and again I get quite pissy about the way an editorial is shot and the models used. I consider Russh magazine to be an important part of fashion. It's honest voice and focus on natural beauty is a rare thing in the industry. However, the editorial in the latest issue 'Sorry no one's home' is a bit off the mark. The model Svetlana is either very young or at least looks very young and the idea of her lounging around in very adult lingerie and fitted dresses just puts me right off.

And, I believe it should be 'Sorry noone's home'. I.e. Noone is one word...

Taking advantage of sales

I'm never one to buy on the premise of a style being 'so hot right now' and therefore paying full price. My preference is to purchase shoes on sale or vintage pre-loved shoes for a number of reasons. Of course affordability is always the biggest part, but sometimes buying things that haven't been as popular is what makes me want them that bit more.

In Australia, the range of shoes is extensive but tends to be repetitive from store to store. Franchise stores like Mollini, Nine West, Zu and Sidewalk Sole, tend to have competitively priced shoes which is great; but the same style is sold at each store.

Having said that, sometimes these stores stock a shoe that isn't right of the moment, but has the certain quality that is lust worthy.

These slingbacks (usually not my style) in a myriad of colours are a great shoe for any occasion, and of course that's important. The super high heel is only good for those that go out dancing a lot (and drinking to numb the pain) or those with Carrie Bradshaw esque pain thresholds...

I'm really disappointed to see that when ANTM (Australia) comes up with an amazing photoshoot, Chanel on pylons, the girls can't deliver. I'm not a huge fan of these shows, not because it's not interesting but because I see so many clueless girls, only made famous by their willowly frame, put to shame amazing designers.

This week on AusNTM, the girls got to wear these gorgeous Chanel booties and boy am I jealous. Too bad the producers of the AusNTM website cropped the shoes out of the downloadable images.

I find this image of Carmen Kass so lovely. It's an amazing outfit that so many women could wear based on the proportions. Adding curves to a slimmer woman, and accentuating curves in a more voluptuous woman. The tightly wrapped chain necklace adds the required edge to make this outfit sexy secretary.

Why designers are getting it wrong

When I talked about Scandinavian designers the other week, I mentioned that the forward thinking nature of these designers is WHERE IT'S AT. Without forward thinking, creativity and imagination, design is lost to the wilderness, to the masses whom do not care.

So imagine my surprise when a young designer in America, land of plenty, finds it hard to live up to his Nordic counterparts...

Jerome C Rousseau, despite a cheerful profile on Style.com, has let me down. He's let down women (and maybe some men) everywhere. A breakthrough shoe collection, by a young, somewhat dashing cool gentleman, should be astounding. The deafening silence I should hear as I gaze at the images has not yet come to be.

Pale pink pumps with a skinny stiletto, cheap looking heel and a big rosette? Too much snakeskin, too many similar shapes, boring, boring, boring.

And as a digital marketer, a boring website never helps.

When its late I spend my time looking up obscure things on the internet. I type 'shoes' into any and every search engine bringing up video, art, film and politics (read: Bush). Sometimes I find something interesting.

In 1980, Werner Herzog, filmmaker, grew up in remote Bavaria and viewed nor used any TV or film or telephones. At 19 he made his first film. This Youtube clip shows Herzog talking about the problems with pop culture and the lack of adequate images in 1980. Nearly 30 years on, we have the same problems. Are we really evolving?

Black Shoes

In general, black shoes are the fail-safe easy option that most people choose to avoid making any fashion mistakes. Most often, I'd say that black is boring and though its safe, it can often make an outfit look dare I say it, a little bit dowdy.

I've stated my case about The Sartorialist's recent comments, and though I disagree about his opinion, there is no doubt, too much black can be dowdy and frumpy.

So how to tell the difference between black = sexy and black = frumpy? Easy!

Well as a true Melburnian, I am disappointed with The Sartorialist's view of Melb v's Sydney in the style stakes. Pedestrian has offered up some of the quotes from an article with Sydney Morning Herald and the comments left on Pedestrians site are enough to make this lady laugh a whole lot.

My view? Of course Melbourne is better.

Dolci Firme

Dolci Firme is owned by Bianca Bucchieri, a purveyor of quality and style, Bianca stocks her tiny stores with the best shoes from major and some unlikely brands.

One of the most fashion forward (and notably my favourite) brands stocked in Dolci Firme is Le Silla. Le Silla is an Italian brand that I noticed on my European tour last year. Italians are known for quality and a certain style, but not usually being fashion forward. Of course there are always exceptions such as the creative director behind Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci. The self-proclaimed struggler, Tisci gave the tired French fashion house a new life. Italians are making waves by stepping away from the sexy and OTT style of yesterday.

Why not trying is so cool

The idea of effortless dressing isn't new. The 'I just woke up and picked up the dirty clothes on the floor' supermodels favourite line to the popular blogger's perfect photo of their outfit; one of 100 photos their boyfriend took on the side of the road in their tiny native town.

This idea has become such a difficult notion, it's not effortless or easy, it takes careful and deliberate shopping expeditions, serious editing of ones wardrobe and hours preening to make your bedhead hair look just that.

One of the favourite fashion editors ideas on this subject is to suggest their loyal readers not wear 'anything from one designer, one season or with one theme... sometimes wrong is right' (Harpers Bazaar, May 2009). The idea of natural ugliness is nothing new to me. I'm a firm believer that embracing the ugly daily in your outfits will bring you an effortless style that doesn't look put together at all.

The most annoying thing about the article in Harpers Bazaar is their insidious reference to ERIN. God how I dislike that woman. Erin's suggestion is 'when you think yo've spent too much time getting ready, stop. It's better to get dressed on a whim because you make instinctual choices'. Erin's style is emulated by a number of bloggers and while it may suit those california girl types, it certainly doesn't suit the majority of women.

The article suggests other positive models for effortless dressing such as Stella McCartney and Chloe Sevigny who definitely are perenially cool, but not for want of trying. A lot of effort is put into their effortless outfits.

Oh and if you want to really nail this look, you need to have long messy hair, so shorter haired girls, just forget it. For some of us, looking polished is the only way and we won't follow the garden path that Erin and others like her are making oh so cool.

Vogue Says I'm Old

Unkempt Tights

There is a difference between wearing tights that look gorgeously ripped or precisely cut (i.e. laser cut) and the unkempt and 'I've been out all night' look. The latter is certainly not elegant and not my cup of tea.

And generally, as in the case of my Celyn B Gucci knockoffs, the knockoffs tend to actually be an improved version. But Kirkwood just finishes everything off so damn well.

An effort to be personal

In an effort to keep this blog personal, and to maybe clear my head, I wanted to let my lovely readers know that I'm well on my way to being romantically happy. Back in August I broke up with my long time boyfriend; we lived together and were so in love, that we never realised how badly we treated each other. Now a long time on, he has a new girlfriend (who will never replace me, which is a healthy thing I've realised) and I am dating happily, meeting people who suit me just that little bit more. I'll always believe in love and I hope that you do too.

The proliferation of young bloggers

I've been thinking about this for some time, and thought maybe I'd write about it. A lot of bloggers that post often and receive huge amounts of attention for that, are very young. No doubt these young women (and a few men) are talented, but what differences are there between the proliferation of these bloggers and the few older women (and men) who also write a blog, popular or not.

In my mind, and this will sound rude but it really isn't, younger bloggers, those still in high school, have more time and less responsibilities (including maybe not working at all), which allows more time for these pursuits. In addition, all income can be spent on fashion including the obvious apparel and accessories, but also magazines and makeup.

Those older, in their twenties will find many competitors for their times. Relationships, work, rent and bills all take up our time, and so time spent on our blogs might be difficult to find. I guess my point is that having days and days to spend time taking photos of outfits you don't even wear anywhere is easy to do when you have the time. I wish I had more time to make this blog into something more interesting.

Even Vogue (Australia) is on my side these days. In this month's issue they can report that shoes are becoming more and more important in the fashion world.

Manolo Blahnik, the creator of the most prolific shoes that will adorn women's feet while Sex And The City is around, and also may I add, the creator of the most boring shoes on the planet, has been quoted as saying, "I've never seen such ugly shoes in my life" about 2009's footwear.

While shoes are becoming increasingly higher, which is not something I really admire, so too are they becoming more interesting.
